Comedy duo Kate McLennan and Kate McCartney have begun filming a high-profile new series for Amazon Prime Video, TV Blackbox reports.

The popular duo described the eight-part series titled Deadloch as a fun mix of crime, feminism and comedy.

Filmed on location in Tasmania, it stars Kate Box (Wentworth) and Madeline Sami (The Breaker Upperers) as two mismatched cops on the trail of a killer who has upended the sleepy hamlet of Deadloch.

Nina Oyama of ABC’s hit Utopia plays a passionate junior police officer who assists detectives in their investigation, which unfolds as Deadloch prepares for its arts and crafts festival.

McCartney, 41, and McLennan, 42, widely known as Two Kates, said they were delighted to have the streaming giant’s backing.

“The fact that our Australian feminist dark crime comedy is launching globally on Prime Video for 200 million Prime members to view is breathtaking,” they said.

Deadloch is the third time Amazon Prime Video has backed an Australian-produced scripted drama.

Co-written and created by the Two Kates, Deadloch has attracted a high profile cast including Tom Ballard, Mia Morrissey, Nick Simpson-Deeks, Kris McQuade and Pamela Rabe.

Directors include Gracie Otto, who just completed her feature debut Seriously Red, Ben Chessell of The Great and Beck Cole of Black Comedy.

Rising to fame on the 2015 ABC hit The Katering Show, the team followed it up with the notoriously jaw-dropping breakfast TV satire Get Krack! not.

Building on their followers, the Two Kates produced the comedy podcast Slushy.

Designed as a live-action series, it was an ambitious workplace comedy set at an Antarctic research station and was another hit for the team.
