Broken Lizard’s next film parodies the Hunchback of Notre-Dame
Broken Lizard’s next project has been revealed. The famous comedy troupe, whose previous theatrical releases include titles like Super Troopers, Club terror, and Oktoberfest, have reportedly started production on a new film in Los Angeles. Simply titled Almost, the film is described as a satirical version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, following “the story of an unfortunate hunchback who longs for love, but finds himself in the middle of a murderous quarrel between the Pope and the King of France when each orders the hunchback to kill the other”.
Kevin Heffernan directs and stars in the project. He also wrote the screenplay with Broken Lizard members Steve Lemme, Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske, who will also serve as executive producers. Meanwhile, Adrianne Palicki (L’Orville) joined the cast. Details on who the Broken Lizard team members will play have yet to be revealed.
“I’m very, very excited to bring the Broken Lizard gang together, but I’m even more excited to finally be able to use my PhD in French Medieval Studies. It’s been a long time coming,” Heffernan said of the project.
“We love Broken Lizard and are always happy to collaborate,” added DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas of Searchlight Pictures. “Kevin, Steve, Jay, Paul and Erik are a rowdy, talented and hysterical bunch. We can’t wait to see them bring their sizzling charm to this satirical version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. “
Now 20 years old, Super Troopers is one of the most popular films from the team at Broken Lizard. He follows a group of Vermont State Soldiers who aren’t exactly high-end professionals, but must come together to do the right thing when the situation calls for it. More recently, the gang got back together for the sequel Super Troopers 2, this time as a result of soldiers caught up in an international border dispute with Canada. Jay Chandrasekhar teased that a third installment, dubbed Super Troopers 3: Winter Soldiers, is also under development.
Broken Lizard also brought in Bill Paxton to star in the horror comedy Club terror in 2004, a classic that doesn’t seem to get the attention it deserves these days. Their other films include Oktoberfest (2006), The smacking salmon (2009), and Freeloaders (2012). Fans were waiting to find out what the group’s next official project would be and now the cameras have already started rolling. Almost.
Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme are also the creators of the comedy series TruTV Tacoma FD. Originally premiered in 2019, the series has since launched its third season in September. He follows firefighters to a Tacoma fire station and what they sometimes do when there is no fire to put out. Heffernan and Lemme also star with Marcus Henderson, Eugene Cordero, Gabriel Hogan and Hassie Harrison.
From Searchlight Pictures, the company behind the Super Troopers movies, Almost would be in development for a debut album exclusively on Hulu in the United States. It will also be available on Star + in Latin America and Disney + elsewhere. No release date has yet been set for the film. This news comes to us from Variety.
