‘Eric Dier bows out …’: football fans go wild on social media after Spurs defender’s goal

‘Eric Dier takes his bow… it’s one of the worst self-defense goals I have ever seen’: Football fans go wild on social media after Spurs defender’s comedy mistake against Newcastle – as it is emphasized that this will be seen on ‘many blooper programs’ in the years to come
- Eric Dier was guilty of an own 89th-minute goal against Newcastle
- His blushes were spared as Tottenham still managed a 3-2 win at St James’ Park
- The Spurs defender has been jointly named Man of the Match with Sergio Reguilon
- The Tottenham duo played a key role in alerting the referee of a medical emergency
Eric Dier may have been named Man of the Match along with teammate Sergio Reguilon following Tottenham’s win over Newcastle, but a comedy blunder threatened to spoil his display at St James’ Park.
After 89 minutes, Tottenham looked to have the win with a comfortable 3-1 lead and Newcastle to 10 men, but the hosts managed to cut the deficit thanks to Dier.
The England international was guilty of a horrible self-imposed goal. As Jacob Murphy’s free kick from the right fell awkwardly in front of him, he leaned towards the ball, missed a header attempt and punched the ball emphatically into the far corner.
Luckily for Dier, his comedic header didn’t cost Spurs as they left St James’ Park with three points in the bag and a fifth place finish ahead of Manchester United.

Football fans went wild on social media mocking Dier for “one of the worst self-defense goals” of all time
But many fans had hilarious reactions to the disastrous home goal, with one insisting it was “one of the worst goals” they have seen.
Football fans took to social media after the Spurs defender’s comedy mistake against Newcastle in bewilderment.
A few mocked Dier claiming that the own goal will be broadcast in blooper programs for years to come and that it is “the least surprising thing in football”.

Some fans have claimed their own goal will be on the bloopers’ schedules for years to come.
While some were shocked by the horrible mistake, others were less surprised.
Some football fans found Dier’s goal well in the character of the defender and made no attempt to hide their lack of surprise.
One claimed the 27-year-old had “summed up his entire career”, while another said his knee strike was “Eric Dier’s greatest goal”.

Other fans weren’t surprised by the defender’s mistake, saying it was the “most difficult thing”
In the first half, play was temporarily suspended due to a medical emergency in the stands.
Both Reguilon and Dier were essential in alerting match officials, with the latter sprinting towards Newcastle’s dugout mimicking the urgent need for a defibrillator, earning them the Man of the Match title.
