HBO’s comedy will likely end after season 2
Avenue 5HBO’s second voyage could indeed be the last for HBO’s space comedy. An exclusive report from Deadline reveals that the show may end after Season 2 airs, which is expected to arrive this fall. Additionally, the cast of Armando IannucciThe series have been released from their contracts to pursue other jobs in the industry, leaving that ship unmanned.
The end of Avenue 5 is likely the result of a long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Season 1 had the unfortunate luck of airing in January 2020, which, in turn, saw the series pick up for a second season a month later – just before the pandemic hit. The unfortunate moment pushed production back until August 2021 and the huge gap between seasons didn’t bode well for the cast whose options presented themselves. With some of these actors now signing on for new roles, the series is highly unlikely to continue.
Avenue 5 bears many similarities to another doomed space comedy, Netflix’s space force; both shows had big-name creators at the helm, Veepis Iannucci for Avenue 5 and The offices Greg Daniels for Space force. Both shows also had a loaded cast led by a fan favorite, in this case, Hugues Lauriewhile the Netflix show had Steve Carrell. However, Avenue 5 leaned far more into science fiction territory than the Daniels’ workplace sitcom never did. The HBO comedy saw Laurie and company aboard an intergalactic space cruise that veers off course after a freak accident kills the chief engineer. Laurie played ship captain Ryan Clark, who tries to control everything and help get the ship back to Earth before supplies run out, a task made all the more difficult since he was just an actor. hired to play the captain in order to reassure passengers while the ship’s automated control system does all the work.
The second season will see the conditions on Avenue 5 much worse than ever. As the real team and the fake employees work together to come up with a solution that will get everyone home in six months instead of the original three years, their plan fails due to utter incompetence. Their grand plan to readjust their course by launching cargo from the stern of the ship instead adds five years to their three-year delay after they accidentally launch it out of port. With passengers now aware that the captain and much of the crew are fraudsters, tension is at an all-time high as the new season approaches.
Joining Laurie is a star-studded cast that includes the likes of Josh Gad, Zack Woods, Rebecca before, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Nikki Amuka Birdand Ethan Phillips. Iannucci executive produced the series with Kevin Loader, Simon Blackwell, Tony Rockand Will Smith alongside co-executive producers Pierre Fellows and Becky Martin. Steve Clark Hall produces the series which is co-produced by Sky UK and HBO.
Season 1 of Avenue 5 can currently be streamed on HBO Max. There is no confirmed release date yet for its second and likely final season.
