Hollyoaks spoilers: Brookside and Corrie legend Michael Starke is chosen
Soap royalty Michael Starke is set to appear in Hollyoaks for a cameo – as a cab driver who brings awkwardness and embarrassment to the date of Nancy (Jessica Fox) and Darren (Ashley Taylor Dawson).
Michael is best known for his role as Sinbad at Brookside, but he was also the head of the Morton family at Coronation Street.
Nancy and Darren tentatively head to a date to see if they can get things back on track – but it’s fair to say their cab driver is stealing the show and making things pretty uncomfortable.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Michael said: ‘I’m friends with Duncan Foster the director and we’ve been working on The Royle and Benidorm. He’s a great guy and he saw my name on the cast and asked if I would.
“I would have done it anyway, it’s literally around the corner and it’s a fun part, but especially during those times it’s good. It happened at the right time because I had a few roles on TV, so I’m a bit of a part.
“ The young actors were amazing and a lot of fun – and so many people on the Brookside team, they were always there. I filmed my scenes and spent the rest of the day finding everyone and chatting.
Speaking of his character, he laughed: ‘He’s cheeky and curious, the situation pays off because Darren has a woman in the cab one day and another the other day, so he’s really taking the Mickey. He laughs at him a bit and says he’s got into a real mess. I really enjoyed it. It’s such a great group there!
So, would he like to have a more permanent role as a character to bring some slight relief to Hollyoaks?
Michael’s response was instantaneous. He said: Oh absolutely! It was the good thing about Brookside, it was right around the corner. That’s how Sinbad started, he was just a recurring character but gradually he became more central and I ended up staying 16 years!
As Brookside’s 40th birthday approaches, Michael has only fond memories of the time: “ It was really a great experience and I was able to unearth Trevor Joardache. Most people think I buried the body, I need to fix it. This is probably the biggest storyline in the series. And then he had the first love affair between people of the same sex. This has given the story much more longevity.
“I would love to have a reunion with everyone – maybe they could repeat it all and we can get a fee!” A lot of people want it back, but the setting is now private and it would all be new characters, so you probably couldn’t call it Brookside anymore.
And Michael commends Hollyoaks for taking over for tackling serious issues and storylines, adding: ‘I’m glad they took a bit of the Brookside legacy – there were a lot of great actors in the game. series and there is so much talent in Hollyoaks too. ‘
What other roles would he like to take on?
He laughed: “ I would love to play something meaner – I’m typed but I’ve had a diverse career and it’s better to be typed than not to choose everything! I know I’ll never be Batman or James Bond, I have to stay within the parameters of my appearance.
“But it would be nice to play something darker. They would never suspect me, they think I was Sinbad – I would love to play something spooky! And of course I could also tick Emmerdale and EastEnders – make it all tick!
