Joe Rogan is convinced The Hangover is the last great comedy because ‘awakening killed the genre’

Controversial podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan called the 2009s The hangover as the latest best comedy movie – citing “reviving” as the main reason good comedies aren’t made anymore.
Speaking to fellow comedian Tom Papa during a recent episode of his iconic, Spotify-supported podcast that angered musicians The Joe Rogan Experiencethe part-time UFC commentator has turned to movies, particularly the comedy genre.
While trying to think of the “last really good comedy movie,” Rogan and Dad finally came up with the bachelor party comedy starring Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Bradley Cooper. The hangover as a potential competitor.
“Before, you could – There’s something about Mary, Kingpin. You just broke them. You knew what they were,” Rogen said.
“It’s like the revival has killed comedy in so many ways.”
Directed by Jokerit’s Todd Phillips, The hangover revolved around three pals celebrating their friend’s last days of freedom before his wedding with a chaotic trip to Las Vegas. The film was hugely popular – grossing an estimated $465 million at the worldwide box office and spawning two sequels.
Before landing on The hangoverRogen and Papa met a few other suitors, including Seth Rogen’s 2013 comedy meta-set It is the end and the 2012 house party film, Project X.
“This might be the last of the Mohicans,” Rogan said of It is the enda film that saw Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride struggle with the end of the world.
“Is there a woke comedy? Is there even an attempt? Is there even an attempt at a politically correct comedy movie?” Rogen asked. “They just stopped making comedy movies.”
Dad responded to this dilemma by suggesting that it’s hard to make a modern comedy film “without being rapist and homophobic”.
Rogen replied, “but it’s not just that, it’s like any obnoxious behavior”,
After some back and forth, the pair finally landed on The hangover like the last great funny movie.
“Wooow,” Rogan concluded, “They murdered comedy.”
