Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne adapt Irish feature film “Extra Ordinary” as comedy series in preparation at TBS – Deadline
EXCLUSIVE: Irish independent feature film , a horror comedy about an anti-ghost duo, premiered in 2019 at SXSW to receive rave reviews.
It’s now being adapted into a half-hour comedy series for TBS.
The Turner-owned cable network put the project in development with Animal Pictures, the production company run by Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne and Danielle Renfrew Behrens.
The trio will produce the adaptation with Katie Holly and Yvonne Donohoe of Irish company Blinder Films, which produced the original film with Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, who wrote and directed the original feature film attached to write and direct the series.
Extra ordinary follows Rose and Martin, a ghost hunter duo, as they counsel ghosts in their tiny Irish village while navigating their own burgeoning and at times awkward relationship. Everything is going well until an American family with supernatural powers takes up residence in the local castle.
The film starred Maeve Higgins as Rose and Barry Ward as Martin with Will Forte and Claudia O’Doherty as well. It was released in the UK and Ireland in 2019 and released in the US in March 2020.
The adaptation is the latest project from Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, who were recently commissioned by Amazon Studios to rewrite and direct a sci-fi feature film. Sid from an original screenplay by Travis Milloy. The duo also wrote and directed an original stop-motion feature film for Aardman Animations.
Rudolph and Lyonne launched Animal Pictures in 2018 with veteran independent producer Renfrew Behrens. The company is currently filming the untitled AppleTV + half-hour comedy series starring Rudolph, created by Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard, and is in the works for Rian Johnson’s hour-long mystery series. He is also in post-production on both the second season of Russian doll for Netflix and Hulu’s Untitled Sammi Cohen Feature starring Rowan Blanchard and Auli’i Cravalho.
