SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – You know the old adage: laughter is the best medicine.
Nobody knows that better than Jonny Donahoe.
The British comedian crossed the pond to Santa Barbara to support the New Beginnings Counseling Center’s annual fundraiser.
“It’s a pretty unusual and wonderful organization,” Donahoe said. “It should be replicated around the world. That’s my view.”
Donohoe’s stage performance, “Every Brilliant Thing,” mixes humor with the serious and often heartbreaking topics of depression, mental illness, and suicide.
“People, when given a lot of knowledge about suicide, they find it contagious; the more you know about it, the more dangerous it can be. But ignoring talking about suicide is just as dangerous.”
The comedian’s goal is to help audiences get rid of the stigma that affects so many people of all ages these days, all over the world.
“I think it’s really important to know that either you’re going to have depression yourself, if you live a long life, or you’re going to meet someone you really love who is going through it,” Donohoe said. “So equip yourself with the knowledge and skills to deal with this, to help someone, to help yourself.”
Donahoe’s performances will begin Friday night at the Center Stage Theater in Paseo Nuevo and continue through Sunday.
All proceeds benefit New Beginnings and the people the nonprofit helps throughout Santa Barbara County.
