The Kids are back!

After many years, Canada’s favorite sketch troupe, “The Kids in the Hall”, will be back on our screens. The original CBC TV series ended 27 years ago and will now return via Amazon Prime with a reboot on May 13.

Eight episodes

The show consists of eight episodes produced by Project 10, Lorne Michael’s Broadway Video and a Canadian production company. It will include original members Bruce McCulloch, Dave Foley, Mark McKinney, Kevin McDonald and Scott Thompson.

They are like a family

Although it’s been years since they’ve worked together, Scott Thompson told CBC News the band has no trouble getting back in the groove. “We’ve always been together – even when we haven’t seen each other for a long time, we fall back into it. It’s like family. The family you love.”

“It’s just us who do comedy sketches”

In an interview with CBC News, Dave Foley described the new series as follows: “It’s just us doing comedy sketches, at this point in our lives. Trying to reflect the world we find ourselves in and to make it funny. All we’re doing is trying to make each other laugh – and if other people are laughing, that’s just a really good side effect.”

First TV sketch series since 1995

In 2010, the cast of “The Kids in the Hall” reunited for an eight-episode miniseries called “Death Comes to Town” and did several live shows together. However, the reboot will be the group’s first comedy television series since 1995.

Push the limits

“The Kids in the Hall” was known for being ahead of its time when it was first released and pushing the boundaries of what was accepted on Canadian television.

Push new limits

Mark McKinely told CBC News: “I don’t think we’re going to push the same boundaries, but there are going to be new boundaries. We don’t really think in terms of ‘Oh, we’re going to break [boundaries].’ It’s kind of, we write what makes other people laugh.”

Pioneers

The original series pioneered queer representation on television, which created controversy at the time. Scott Thompson’s character, Buddy Cole, is a good example of this and shows how the show was ahead of its time in many ways.

Who can forget Buddy Cole?

Buddy Cole’s character was a gay socialite who liked to poke fun at his own life and the gay community. For example, in season 1, episode 20, Buddy talks about being a Canadian in show business, saying, “Americans know as much about Canada as straight people know about gay people.

Today, things are “a thousand times different”

These days, things are quite different, as Scott Thompson told CBC in an interview: “It’s a thousand times different.… My generation, I’m a war veteran – like, I went out in a war. So for that, it’s like in peacetime. For me, how can it get better?”

From 1988 to 1995

“The Kids in the Hall” debuted in 1988 and was renewed for a total of five seasons until its end in April 1995.

Very popular

The unique show helped many people feel less isolated and ok with being different from the status quo, earning the comedy troupe many devoted fans.

Oh head of cabbage!

It also became legendary for the unique characters created on the show. Who doesn’t remember ‘Cabbage Head’, ‘Chicken Lady’ or the ‘Head Crusher’ sketch??
