“The Office”: the Australian version could redefine the character of Michael Scott
With its ubiquitous memes, podcasts and bobbleheads, it was unquestionably more popular than the BBC series. The question was posed to Gervais on Twitter — if the American version was so much bigger and better than the original, how did that make him feel?
Response from Gervais: “Fucking rich.”
But why stop there? Gervais practically turned Office in a fast food franchise. There is an Indian version revolve around Jagdeep Chaddha, manager of a paper mill in the suburbs of New Delhi. Gilles Triquet is the French manager Office in Villepinte, an office park in the north of Paris. Viewers in Israel can catch Great officeled by Regional Director Avi Meshulam. Additional releases take place in Canada, Chile, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany and Sweden.
Apparently, managerial incompetence translates into all cultures.
Which brings us to the latest reincarnation of the series, Australia office (not the official title but apparently under study.) So far details are scarce: the show will stream on Amazon Prime Video and feelers have been sent to popular Australian comedians like fisherman’s island and Jim Jefferies without real commitment for the moment.
