THE THESIS at the Alex St Kilda Theater
Melbourne-based circus performer Ciara Thorburn recently gave birth to a locked-in baby of a different kind. A 50-minute voyeuristic glimpse into the life of an eccentric polymath, in August, The Thesis takes center stage at St Kilda’s Alex Theater – superbly emphasizing that there are no limits to what can be performed when you are supposed to be doing something else.
Driven by silent comedy and theatrical circus, this ambitious Australian first season is a special reflection of the creative process as an academic navigates writers’ block, procrastination and perfectionism, while writing their sacred thesis.
writer / performer Ciara Thorburn explains:
After obtaining my third degree (a bachelor’s degree in circus arts), I entered a pandemic So I decided to make my way into my ninth year of study – rather than writing my thesis, I wrote a show – on writing a show, on writing a thesis, during a pandemic.
Through Expression Australia, the Sustaining Creative Workers program also made me realize the need for greater accessibility in the arts once theaters can reopen our doors. I created the work with this in the foreground. The nicest thing about the show is that most nights I don’t know what’s going to happen. The performance is rooted in moments of improvisation and my ability to react to what is happening with a given audience. My work doesn’t really fit into any box. If I had to label it, I would call it ‘Cult Clown Cinema’.
Melbourne-based progressive and creative mid-career circus artist Ciara Thorburn is a graduate of the Australian National Institute of the Circus Arts. She also trained with the theater master Philippe Gaulier and has toured extensively in Australia, Europe, New Zealand and Japan. His various shows include Shuffle Club Royale, Circus Rio, Wonderland Spiegel tent, Awaji Art Circus in Japan, Edinburgh Fringe’s Late Night Lip Service and Cheeky Cabaret at Brunswick Picture House.
Embracing the mundane and making it remarkable, The Thesis is a subtle but intelligent exploration of the human condition; both inspiring… and incredibly frustrating.
Proudly supported by Creative Victoria, Antipodes Arts and the Alex Theater, The Thesis will be Ciara Thorburn’s first self-designed show.
